Android Offline Maps
Overview
Use offline maps in the OuterSpatial Android app to keep map tiles available when cell service is limited. Download maps before your trip while you still have a reliable connection.
Offline maps are tied to specific places and map styles. A place can have a Standard map, a Satellite map, or both downloaded on your device.
Download a Map
- Open an area, trail, outing, or Point of Interest in the Android app.
- Open the map for that place.
- Tap Download.
- In Download Map, choose Standard, Satellite, or both map styles.
- Wait for the download to finish before leaving reliable service.
The download sheet can show About size, Estimating, or Size Unavailable for each map style. Satellite maps are often larger than Standard maps.
You need to be signed in to download offline maps. If you are not signed in, OuterSpatial asks you to log in before continuing.
Check Download Status
The map download button changes based on the current state:
- Download means no map is downloaded yet.
- Downloading means one or more selected map styles are still downloading.
- Downloaded means the selected offline map content has finished downloading.
If a download fails, try again from the same Download Map sheet while you have a reliable connection.
Use Downloaded Maps
After a map finishes downloading, reopen the same place and map style to use it with limited service. Your Android device GPS can still show your location without cell service when location access is enabled.
Offline maps help with map context, but some content still needs service, such as newly published photos, documents, social updates, and content you did not open or download before going offline.
Manage Offline Maps
Open Offline Maps from the saved/profile area to review maps saved on your device. The Offline Maps screen can show downloaded maps, incomplete downloads, and map details for the related place.
Use Search Maps to find a downloaded map. Use Sort by to sort the list.
Tap a downloaded map to open it. If a download is incomplete, OuterSpatial may ask whether you want to Resume Download or delete it.
Delete Offline Maps
You can delete a single downloaded map from the Download Map sheet by tapping a downloaded map style and confirming Delete Map.
You can also delete maps from Offline Maps:
- Open Offline Maps.
- Use Select or Delete All from the options menu.
- Choose the maps to remove.
- Tap Delete Maps.
- Confirm Delete.
Deleting an offline map removes the downloaded map tiles from your device. You can download the map again later when you have service.
Tips
- Download maps over Wi-Fi before your trip.
- Download only the map styles you need to save device storage.
- Keep OuterSpatial installed and stay signed in so saved offline content and pending submissions can sync later.
- Turn on Android location access if you want your current position on downloaded maps.
Troubleshooting
If a map does not download:
- Confirm you are signed in.
- Check your connection.
- Make sure your device has enough storage.
- Try Standard first if Satellite is too large or slow.
- Reopen Download Map and try again.
If a downloaded map does not appear in Offline Maps, refresh the screen by leaving and returning to Offline Maps. If the download is incomplete, use Resume Download when prompted.
