Find Outdoor Locations for an Activity

Whether you're looking for the perfect horseback riding trail, a scenic hiking path, or a peaceful fishing spot, OuterSpatial Mobile makes it easy to discover outdoor locations tailored to your interests. This guide will walk you through two simple methods to find locations based on specific activities.

Quick Start

Method 1: Using Activity Shortcuts on the Home Screen (Fastest)

The quickest way to find locations for a specific activity is through the community home screen's activity shortcuts.

From the community home screen, you'll see a row of activity icons displayed at the top of your screen. These icons represent popular outdoor activities like hiking, biking, horseback riding, off-roading, and more. If you've saved activity, accessibility, and lifestyle preferences to your profile, these icons will be prioritized based on your personal preferences, making it even easier to find what you love. Simply tap the icon for your desired activity.

The app will automatically navigate to the explore tab and apply the selected activity filter. You'll immediately see all available locations for that activity displayed on both the map view and the list view (which can be accessed by tapping the list view icon to the right of the search bar. This one-tap solution saves time and gets you exploring faster.

Method 2: Using the Explore Tab Filters

For more control over your filtering, you can use the quick filters on the explore tab.

Start by navigating to the explore tab using the bottom navigation bar. Once in the explore tab, look for the filter bar at the top of the screen. Tap on "Activities" in the filter bar to open the activities menu. You'll see a comprehensive list of all available outdoor activities. Browse through the options and select the activity you're interested in.

The map and list view will refresh to show only locations that match your selected activities. This method gives you more flexibility to combine filters and refine your search.

Understanding Your Search Results

Once you've applied an activity filter using either method, the explore tab displays your results in two formats:

Map View: See all matching locations plotted on an interactive map. This visual representation helps you find activities near your current location or in areas you plan to visit. Tap any area, point of interest, trail, or outing on the map to see a card with basic information about the location. If you'd like to see more detail about the location, tap on the card to open the full location screen with complete details, photos, posts, etc.

List View: Access the list view by tapping the list view button in the top bar of the explore screen, located to the right of the search box. The list view displays location cards showing the name of each location, the type of location (area, point of interest, trail, or outing), and a preview photo — when available. This format makes it easy to visually browse through multiple options quickly.

Tips for Better Results

To make the most of the activity search feature, consider these helpful tips:

Combine the activity filter with other available filters to narrow down your options to exactly what you're looking for. Our current filters include:

  • Open/Closed: Find locations that are currently accessible

  • Family-Friendly: Perfect for outings with children

  • Dog-Friendly: Locations where your four-legged friends are welcome

  • Activities: Layer activity types for varied adventures

  • Accessibility: Find locations that match your accessibility needs

  • Seasons: See what's available during specific times of year

For example, you might search for family-friendly horseback riding locations that are open year-round.

Check the details page of each location for specific information about the activity offerings. Some locations might have seasonal availability or require advance booking for certain activities.

Save your favorite locations for quick access later. This is especially useful if you find several great spots for your preferred activity and want to eventually try them all.

Enable location services to see the most relevant results based on your current position. The app can then sort locations by proximity, making it easier to find nearby options.
