Exploring the Map and Places

Overview

Use Explore to find outdoor places in the selected OuterSpatial community. Explore can show places on a map or in a list, including areas, trails, points of interest, outings, and other published places.

Use Explore

Open the Explore tab to see the map for your current community. The map can show nearby places, selected features, paper maps when available, and your current location when location access is enabled.

Map controls can include recenter and current-location controls, a map style option, map options, paper map toggles when paper maps are available, and a download action when you open the map for a specific place. Tap a map feature to open its details.

Switch Between Map and List

Use the map and list control near the search bar to switch views. The map view is useful for seeing where places are located. The list view is useful for scanning names and sorting nearby places.

Use search to find places within the selected community by name. Search can open a selected result on the map, and can center the map around a coordinate or location result. If you start from a recent or saved search, the app can refill the search text and run it again.

Filter Places

Use the filter row to narrow Explore results when filters are available. Filters can include place type, activity, accessibility, or other community-specific options. Reset the filters when you want to return to the full Explore list.

Sort the List

In list view, sort places alphabetically or by distance when location access is available. If location access is not available, Explore uses alphabetical sorting.

Open a Place

Tap a place from the map or list to open its details. Place pages can include descriptions, maps, photos, events, challenges, articles, alerts, paper maps, tickets and reservations, and social content depending on what the organization has published.

Place pages use tabs, such as Info, Plan, Things To Do, and Social, when that content is available. From a place page you can also:

Map Options

On supported maps, open Map Options to change the map type or map details. Standard and Satellite map types may be available. Some places also include activity maps or paper maps published by the organization. To use a map without service, download it first. See Using OuterSpatial Offline.

Location Access

Location access helps OuterSpatial sort nearby places, show your position on the map, and support location-based features. You can still browse published places without location access, but distance and current-location features may be limited.

Troubleshooting

If places or maps do not load:

  1. Check your connection.
  2. On iOS, tap Try Again if the place page says its details are temporarily unavailable.
  3. Pull to refresh.
  4. Confirm you are viewing the intended community.
  5. Turn on location access if distance, current location, or nearby sorting looks wrong.
  6. Try search if the map is not showing the place you expected.
  7. Update OuterSpatial from the App Store or Google Play.

If a place or map still will not load, contact Visitor Success at visitors@outerspatial.com.
