Managing Notifications

Managing Your Settings

You can manage push and email notification settings from the OuterSpatial website or from the "Notification Settings" section in the OuterSpatial app.

Every OuterSpatial email also includes an "Update Your Notification Settings" link at the bottom, which takes you directly to your settings.

On the Web

  1. Go to outerspatial.com/settings/notifications. If you're not logged in, you'll be prompted to log in first.

  2. Use the toggle buttons to turn notifications on or off for each channel. Toggling a channel off disables both push and email notifications for that channel. To keep a channel on but adjust push or email separately, use the checkboxes under the specific notification types.

  3. Click Save.

In the Mobile App

  1. Log in to the app. If you're not logged in, go to the Me tab, tap Log In, and complete the login process.

  2. On the Me tab, tap the settings icon (gear) in the upper-right corner, below the header image.

  3. Tap Notification Settings.

  4. Use the toggle buttons to turn notifications on or off for each channel. Toggling a channel off disables both push and email notifications for that channel. To keep a channel on but adjust push or email separately, use the checkboxes next to each notification type.

Tips & Tricks

Helpful tips for getting the most out of OuterSpatial.

Product Updates

Announcements about new OuterSpatial features.

Social Engagement

Activity on posts you've created or conversations you're participating in.

Organization & Location Subscriptions

Updates from organizations and locations you've subscribed to. You can control five notification types independently:

  • Alerts — Safety notices, closures, and other important updates

  • Check-Ins — When others check in at a location

  • Posts — New posts from other visitors

  • Reviews — New reviews from other visitors

  • Reports — Field reports and conditions updates

Subscribing to Organizations and Locations

You can subscribe to any organization or location from its page on the OuterSpatial website or its screen in the OuterSpatial app. Tap or click the notification bell icon in the header to toggle your subscription on or off. Organization staff can also manage subscriptions in OuterSpatial Manager.

What You'll Receive Based on Your Subscription

When you subscribe to an organization or location, the notifications you receive depend on what you've subscribed to:

  • Organizations — Notifications for content posted to the organization and any location it manages, including areas, points of interest, trails, and outings.

  • Areas — Notifications for content posted to the area and any of its child locations (points of interest, trails, and outings).

  • Points of Interest, Trails, and Outings — Notifications for content posted to that specific location.

How Post Visibility Affects Notifications

When someone creates a post, they choose a visibility setting that determines who can see it—and who receives notifications:

  • Public posts notify all subscribers.

  • Organizations Only posts only notify subscribers who are also members of the relevant organization. For organization posts, this means organization team members. For location posts, this means members of any organization that steward (own, manager, or partner on) that location.

  • Private posts never send notifications to anyone.

If you're subscribed to a location but aren't a member of its managing organization, you won't receive notifications for posts marked "Organizations Only."

How Notifications Cascade

OuterSpatial uses parent-child relationships between organizations, areas, and locations. These relationships affect how notifications flow to subscribers.

Organization subscriptions cover all managed locations. When you subscribe to an organization, you receive notifications for content posted to the organization itself and any location that organization manages. This is a convenient way to stay informed about everything happening across an organization's parks, trails, and other locations.

Area subscriptions cover child locations. When you subscribe to an area, you receive notifications for content posted to the area and any points of interest, trails, or outings within it. You don't need to subscribe to each location individually.

Child location activity notifies parent subscribers. When someone posts content to a point of interest, trail, or outing, subscribers to the parent area and the managing organization also receive that notification.

Outings can belong to multiple areas. Some outings span multiple areas. If you're subscribed to any of those parent areas, you'll receive notifications for content posted to the outing.

Subscriptions vs. Favorites

Subscriptions are separate from favorites. You can favorite an organization or location without subscribing to its notifications, giving you full control over what appears in your notification feed.
