Android Explore and Place Pages

Overview

Use Explore and place pages in the OuterSpatial Android app to find outdoor places, review current conditions, open maps, get directions, save places, subscribe to updates, and contribute posts or reviews.

Place pages can represent areas, trails, outings, and Points of Interest.

Use Explore

Tap Explore to open the map for your current community. The map can show nearby places, selected features, paper maps when available, and your current location when Android location access is enabled.

Map controls can include:

  • Home or recenter controls.
  • Current location.
  • Map style.
  • Map options.
  • Paper map toggles when paper maps are available.
  • Download when you open a map for a specific place.

Tap a map feature to open its bottom sheet, then open the full place page when you want details, tabs, social activity, or visit planning tools.

Search for Places

Use search from Explore to find places and related content. The search screen starts with Search for anything and includes tabs for different result types.

Select a search result to open that place or content item. If you start from a recent search or saved search state, the app can refill the search text and run the search again.

Review a Place Page

At the top of a place page, you can review:

  • Photos.
  • Place type.
  • Rating and review count.
  • Place name.
  • Closure status.
  • Parent area or related place context when available.
  • Distance from your current or approximate location.

Use the top actions to save the place, subscribe to notifications, or open more options. Some actions require you to be signed in.

Use Place Tabs

Place pages use tabs. Available tabs depend on the place type and the content published by the organization.

  • Info can include descriptions, basic details, directions, coordinates, what3words, contact links, documents, accessibility details, paper maps, related places, and stewardship information.
  • Plan can include tickets, passes, and reservations when they are available for an area.
  • Things To Do can include related challenges, events, articles, trails, outings, or Points of Interest.
  • Social shows posts, reviews, check-ins, and reports connected to the place.

Pull down on a place page to refresh the current content.

Check Alerts and Closures

If a place has active alerts, the page can show alert cards near the top. Tap an alert to open the alert detail, or tap View All to see all active alerts for the place.

Review both the closure status chip and active alerts before visiting. Closure status explains access restrictions, while alerts explain what you need to know.

Open Maps and Directions

Tap View Map or a map preview to open the full map for a place. Trails and outings can include elevation details. Areas, trails, outings, and Points of Interest can also link to related stops or features from the map.

From Info, tap an address, coordinates, or directions item to open directions in your device's map app when available.

Use Download on a place map when you want offline map tiles for Android. Offline maps are covered in the Android Offline Maps article.

Save and Subscribe

Tap the bookmark action to save a place. Saved places appear from your profile area.

Tap the notification action to subscribe or unsubscribe from updates for that place. After saving a place, the app may also ask whether you want notifications for it.

Contribute From a Place

Tap Contribute to add supported content for the place, such as a post, review, check-in, or report. Available contribution types can depend on the place, your account state, age assurance requirements, and whether a challenge is connected to the action.

If you are not signed in, OuterSpatial asks you to log in before creating content.

Troubleshooting

If places or maps do not load:

  1. Check your connection.
  2. Pull down to refresh.
  3. Confirm you are viewing the intended community.
  4. Turn on Android location access if distance, current location, or nearby sorting looks wrong.
  5. Try search if the map is not showing the place you expected.

If save, subscribe, or contribution actions do not work, sign in and try again. If a map is needed away from service, download it before your trip.
