Participating in Challenges

OuterSpatial's organization partners run challenges throughout the year to help them collect feedback, answer questions (like "What's most important to backcountry campers?" or "What kind of damage occurred to this trail during the last storm?"), and encourage visitors to get outside in new and exciting ways.

If there are no challenges currently available in your OuterSpatial community, check back regularly — organizations run seasonal challenges throughout the year.

Getting Started

To find a challenge, you can:

  • Browse your community's home screen

  • Use the search tool

  • Follow an invite link or scan a QR code shared by an organization

When you're ready to participate, tap the Participate button on the challenge screen. If you're not already logged in to your OuterSpatial account, you'll be prompted to log in before continuing.

Before you can start, you'll need to view and accept the rules of the challenge. Once accepted, you're officially participating and can begin completing tasks.

Getting Back to a Challenge

Once you've started participating in a challenge, you can return to it anytime to check your progress or complete tasks. Access it the same way you found it originally, or go to the Challenges section in the Me tab.

A challenge will appear in both of these places even if it's invite-only, as long as you're already participating.

Completing Challenge Tasks

Each challenge is made up of one or more tasks. Depending on the challenge, you'll need to complete some or all of the tasks to finish it successfully.

Task Types

OuterSpatial currently supports three task types:

  • Check-in: You must check in while located near the location (area, point of interest, trail, or outing) attached to the task.

  • QR Code: You must scan the QR code associated with the task using the in-app camera/scanner.

  • Survey: You must answer one or more questions that are part of the survey.

Tracking Your Progress

As you complete tasks, they'll move from the To Do tab to the Done tab. Use the Done tab to view details about your completed tasks and any badges you've earned.

Once you've completed the minimum number of tasks required by a challenge, the button on the challenge screen will change to Completed. Some organizations may follow up with you via email to send a reward or thank you for participating.

Offline Support

Once you've started participating in a challenge, most functionality works even without a network connection. You can complete tasks while offline, and your responses will automatically sync when your phone reconnects to the internet.

Note: You do need an internet connection to initially join a challenge—offline support kicks in after that.

Troubleshooting

If you run into issues while trying to start a challenge, try these steps:

  1. Check your internet connection. A network connection is required to start participating in a challenge.

  2. Update the app. Make sure you're on the latest version of OuterSpatial by checking for updates in the App Store or Google Play.
