Android Challenge Participation
Overview
Use challenges in the OuterSpatial Android app to join activities created by organization partners, complete tasks, submit photos, and track progress toward badges or results.
Challenges can be public in a community or shared through a private invite URL. You need to be signed in before joining a challenge or submitting challenge responses.
Find Challenges
You can find challenges from several places:
- The Open & Upcoming Challenges section on your community home screen.
- The Challenges list.
- Things To Do on place pages when a place is connected to a challenge.
- A private challenge invite URL opened in your Android web browser.
Open a challenge to review the host organization, description, dates, requirements, tasks, locations, photos, social activity, badges, prizes, terms, and FAQs when those sections are available.
Review Challenge Timing
Challenge timing controls what actions are available:
- Open challenges can be joined and completed.
- Upcoming challenges can show Add to Calendar until they start.
- Expired challenges no longer accept new submissions.
- Open-Ended challenges do not show a fixed end date.
If a challenge has expired or has not started yet, OuterSpatial explains that submissions are not currently accepted.
Join a Challenge
- Open the challenge.
- Tap Join Challenge.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Review the host, requirements, terms, and any custom rules.
- Tap I Agree.
The join screen can show requirements such as notifications, location access, required task counts, custom rules, or email sharing with the organization. Some challenges also require a complete profile or age assurance before you can continue.
Complete Tasks
Open the Tasks tab to review all available tasks. You can filter between To-Do and Completed tasks, change the task view, and pull down to refresh.
Common task types include:
- Check-In: Go to the specified location and tap Check In.
- QR Code: Scan the QR code provided by the organization.
- Survey: Complete the required survey.
- Photo: Submit a photo for the required place or category.
Some tasks can be locked until another task is complete. Tap a task to see its status, instructions, location action, response action, or sharing option.
Submit Photos
Photo challenges can use locations, categories, or both.
- Open the Photos, Locations, or Categories tab depending on the challenge.
- Tap Submit Photo.
- Choose the required location or category when prompted.
- Add or change the photo.
- Answer any required questions.
- Submit the photo.
Some categories have submission limits. If you reach the maximum number of submissions for a category, OuterSpatial shows Limit Reached.
View Progress and Results
Challenge tabs depend on the challenge type and your participation state.
- Details shows the challenge description, host, rules, prizes, and related information.
- Tasks shows available, locked, completed, and pending tasks.
- Photos shows submitted photo galleries and My Submissions for photo challenges.
- Social shows related posts when social activity is enabled.
- Badges or completed task views show earned progress when available.
After a social challenge expires, tap View Results when it is available to review leaderboard or result information.
Use Challenge Location Alerts
Some location-based challenges can remind you when you are near task locations. To use these alerts on Android, turn on Challenge Location Alerts and allow the app to access location while it is closed or in the background when prompted.
You can remove background location access in Android system settings after completing the challenge.
Submit Pending Responses
If a challenge response is saved while your connection is limited, it can appear as a pending response. Open the challenge options menu and choose the pending response action to submit it when you are back online.
Keep OuterSpatial installed and stay signed in so pending responses can sync.
Leave a Challenge
Open the challenge options menu and tap Leave Challenge when you no longer want to participate.
Leaving a challenge deletes your existing responses for that challenge and cannot be undone.
Troubleshooting
If you cannot join or complete a challenge:
- Check your internet connection.
- Confirm you are signed in.
- Make sure the challenge is open and accepting submissions.
- Review the task requirements, such as location, QR code, photo, survey, profile, age assurance, or email sharing requirements.
- Turn on Android location permissions for check-ins or location alerts.
- Update OuterSpatial from Google Play.
If a private challenge does not appear in the list, open the invite URL from your Android web browser.
