Tags

You can add tags to locations (areas, points of interest, outings, and trails) in OuterSpatial Manager. These tags are used to surface locations when users interact with the search and filter tools in OuterSpatial Mobile and Web. Because of this, it's important that you keep the tags associated with your locations up-to-date. This will make it possible for visitors to efficiently discover your data and content.

Bulk Updating Tags

As outlined in the OuterSpatial Data Guidebook, you can provide tags with your Geospatial Data and then pass them off to our Customer Success team for import into OuterSpatial.

Updating Tags in Manager

  1. Under the "Locations" section, select a location type (Areas, Points of Interest, Outings, or Trails).

  2. Select the edit form for a specific location by clicking on its name in the table.

  3. Use the "Details" section to add/remove tags like "Seasons of Availability", "Allowed Activities", "Good For", "Rules & Regulations", "Accessibility", and "Allowed Access".

  4. Once you've updated the tags, hit the "Save" button to apply your changes.

Trail Tags

Trails are created in OuterSpatial by importing trail segment data from your organization's Geospatial Data. This means that a trail can be made up of one or more segment, each of which can have its own set of tags.

OuterSpatial doesn't expose individual trail segments to visitors because we've found that this level of detail adds little value (and unnecessary complexity) to the user experience. Because of this, to ensure that accurate tags get exposed at the trail level, OuterSpatial automatically "rolls up" tags that exist on all of a trail's segments to the trail itself.

To demonstrate, let's say a trail is made up of two segments which have the following tags:

  • Segment A:

    • Allowed Access = Pedestrians, Dogs, and Horses

  • Segment B:

    • Allowed Access = Pedestrians and Dogs

The trail that's composed of those two segments would automatically have "Allowed Access = Pedestrians and Dogs".

In the "Details" section of the trail form in OuterSpatial Manager, you can see the trail segment tags that are automatically "rolled up" to the trail highlighted above each of the tag selects:

Tag Categories

The lists below highlight the Tag Categories that are supported for each location type (areas, points of interest, and trails) and outings. These Tag Categories are used to "group" the tags for display in OuterSpatial Mobile.

Outings

Super Categories

Super Categories are used to drive the search and filter tools in OuterSpatial Mobile. Super Categories are derived from the underlying tags, so they're automatically created as you update tags and you don't maintain them on their own.

Super Categories can also apply across different location types. For instance, when the "Hiking" quick filter/Super Category is applied in the Explore tab of OuterSpatial Mobile, the following locations will display on the map and in the list view:

  1. Areas with one or more of the following tags:

    1. "Allowed Activities > Hiking"

    2. "Allowed Activities > Running"

    3. "Allowed Activities > Trail Running"

    4. "Allowed Activities > Walking"

  2. Outings with one or more of the following tags:

    1. "Allowed Access > Pedestrians"

    2. "Allowed Activities > Hiking"

    3. "Allowed Activities > Trail Running"

    4. "Allowed Activities > Walking"

  3. Points of Interest with one or more of the following tags:

    1. "Allowed Activities > Hiking"

    2. "Allowed Activities > Running"

    3. "Allowed Activities > Trail Running"

  4. Trails with one or more of the following tags:

    1. "Allowed Access > Pedestrians"

    2. "Allowed Activities > Hiking"

    3. "Allowed Activities > Trail Running"

    4. "Allowed Activities > Walking"

The list of Super Categories that are currently supported will grow and evolve over time as our data model matures.
