Outings

Overview

Use Outings to manage curated visitor experiences such as walks, tours, bike loops, backpacking trips, and routes with interpretive stops.

For a step-by-step creation walkthrough, see Creating an Outing.

Open Outings

Open Locations > Outings from the sidebar.

The Outings table supports search, filters, sorting, pagination, row actions, and bulk actions. Select an outing row to open its detail pages.

Manage the Outings Table

Use the table to review outing name, photo status, visibility, distance, and open or closed status.

You can filter by visibility, stewardship, status, photo state, and search text. You can also bulk update visibility, bulk open or close outings, and bulk delete outings when your role allows it.

Create an Outing

Select New Outing to create an outing. Saving the basic information creates a draft and opens the Route tab. Add and save the route line, then use the Review tab to confirm the outing is ready and publish it.

Outings cannot be published without a saved route line. If you bulk publish outings and some outings do not have route lines, Manager skips those outings and tells you which ones were skipped.

Edit Outing Info

Use the Info tab to update the outing's visitor-facing details:

  • Banner image.
  • Name.
  • Description.
  • Route type.
  • Difficulty.
  • Seasons.
  • Allowed access.
  • Activities.
  • Accessibility tags and accessibility description.
  • Rules and regulations.

Select Save after making changes.

Build and Maintain the Route

Use the Route tab to manage the outing route and stops.

You can upload a route file, draw or edit the route on the map, and save route changes. Supported route uploads include GeoJSON and GPX files. If the outing already has a route, Manager asks you to confirm before replacing it with an uploaded file.

The routing summary shows the current engine and Activity. Standard follows trails and roads visible on the map and works offline. Select Edit to choose Valhalla (Experimental) when you want to test its broader routing graph. Standard remains the default, and Manager asks you to acknowledge the experimental-routing notice before first use. Review every generated route before publishing. Saved outings currently retain the final route line rather than its routing source and graph history.

Manage Stops

Stops highlight places along the outing.

From the Route tab, you can:

  • Add a stop from a map click or latitude and longitude.
  • Attach a stop to an existing Point of Interest.
  • Edit stop details.
  • Delete a stop.
  • Reorder stops by dragging them in the stops list.
  • Reorder stops with keyboard-accessible move controls.

Related Areas provide geographic context for an outing. After you save a route, Manager shows ranked Suggested Areas alongside the manual Related Areas controls on the Info tab.

Add suggestions individually. Manager does not select, add, or remove relationships automatically. If an existing Related Area no longer intersects the saved route, Manager shows an advisory and leaves the relationship attached. Use the Info tab to search for, add, or remove Related Areas manually.

Related Area suggestions are optional. A suggestion error never blocks saving or publishing an outing.

Manage Visibility and Status

Use the outing detail header or table actions to update visibility and status.

  • Published outings are visible to visitors.
  • Draft outings are not public.
  • Archived outings are hidden from visitor-facing browsing.
  • Closed status tells visitors the outing is closed.

Publishing requires a saved route line.

Outing detail pages can include these tabs:

  • Route for route lines and stops.
  • Review for the initial Draft-to-Published checklist. This tab appears only during the creation workflow.
  • Social for visitor posts and related social activity.
  • Closures and Alerts when the newer closures experience is enabled.
  • Documents for attached document files.
  • Paper Maps when your organization has paper map access.
  • Transactions for tickets, passes, or reservations attached to the outing.

Embed or Delete an Outing

Use the detail page action menu to create a map embed when map embeds are enabled for your organization.

Use Delete only when the outing should be permanently removed. Confirm the deletion when prompted.
