Locations

Overview

Locations are the places and routes your organization manages in OuterSpatial. Manager supports four high-level location types:

  • Areas
  • Trails
  • Points of Interest
  • Outings

Use Locations to review your map, open location records, manage visibility, update open or closed status, and keep location content organized.

Map

The main Locations map shows your organization's location content in geographic context. You can search the map and select areas, trails, trail segments, points of interest, and outings to open their Manager records.

Location Types

Areas

Areas are parks, preserves, forests, reserves, recreation areas, or other managed outdoor places. Areas often contain trails, points of interest, outings, events, alerts, closures, articles, documents, and paper maps.

Organizations with area geometry editing enabled can create new areas from Manager. Other organizations usually receive area geometry through imports or Customer Success support.

Trails

Trails are linear features that represent trail centerlines. A trail can include one or more segments, and segments can have their own details such as allowed activities or attribution.

Trail records can be reviewed and edited in Manager, but new trail geometry is typically created through imports or Customer Success support rather than the Trails list.

Points of Interest

Points of Interest are mapped features such as trailheads, restrooms, parking areas, viewpoints, visitor centers, water access points, campsites, information kiosks, natural features, and many other amenity or destination types.

Organizations with point-of-interest geometry editing enabled can create new points from Manager. Points can also be organized under parent areas or parent points of interest.

Outings

Outings are curated routes or itineraries. They can follow existing trails and roads, or use custom route geometry. Outings can also include stops along the way.

Outings are usually the best fit when you want to promote a recommended hike, ride, paddle, walk, tour, or other visitor experience.

Location Lists

Open Areas, Trails, Points of Interest, or Outings to work with a table view for that location type.

The list views support:

  • search
  • visibility filters for published, draft, and archived items
  • stewardship filters for owner, manager, and partner relationships
  • open and closed status filters
  • photo filters for items with or without photos
  • named and unnamed filters for trails and points of interest
  • parentage filters for points of interest
  • sortable columns
  • pagination and page-size controls

Select a row or choose Edit from the row menu to open the location record.

Bulk Actions

Use the checkboxes in a location list to select one or more locations, then open Bulk Actions.

Depending on the location type and your permissions, you can:

  • change visibility to published, draft, or archived
  • mark selected locations open
  • mark selected locations closed with a closure reason
  • set or clear a parent point of interest for selected points of interest
  • delete selected locations

Publishing an outing requires route geometry. If you bulk-publish outings and some do not have routes, Manager skips those outings and tells you which ones need route work first.

Visibility and Status

Visibility controls whether a location is published, draft, or archived.

Status controls whether a location is open or closed. Closing a location from a list creates the closure status needed for visitor-facing alerts and closed-state display. For detailed closure management, use the dedicated Closures tools.

Creating and Deleting Locations

Create buttons appear only where Manager supports creation for your organization and permission level:

  • Areas: available when area geometry editing is enabled
  • Points of Interest: available when point-of-interest geometry editing is enabled
  • Outings: available to users who can edit locations
  • Trails: usually managed through imports or support-assisted workflows

Deleting locations is permission controlled. Outings can be deleted by users who can edit them. Areas and points of interest can be deleted when geometry editing is enabled for the organization or by super admins. Trails are restricted to super admins.

Use the dedicated help articles for deeper workflows:

  • Outings for route geometry, stops, publishing requirements, and attachments
  • Closures and Alerts for operational updates
  • Geospatial Data Imports and Exports for large geometry updates
  • Paper Maps for georeferenced PDF maps attached to locations
  • Documents, Images, Events, Articles, and Social for content related to locations
